For LIGA 2025, an art and architecture competition held in Mexico’s City vibrant Colonia Doctores, one of the most authentic and culturally rich neighborhoods in Mexico City, we proposed the opening of the backdoor of Laguna, a collaborative space, towards the neighborhood. This gesture would turn a space that might result as alienating and gentrifying to the people living in the neighborhood, into an open invitation for them to occupy, inhabit, visit, and appropiate the space within.
We believe firmly that the true colors, life and vibrance of Colonia Doctores lie in their streets, within their sidewalks, kids and the residents, not within laguna. So, by opening the door, we invite the city in.
Therefore, our proposal is titled “Open door to every situation”. Taking as a starting point Lygia Clark’s bichos, a series of interactive hinged sculptures which have no aparent front or back and are highly maleable, showing new sides and possibilites as they unfold. We recreated these “critters” or “bugs” using one of the most common sights within the neighborhood and city: the tin trashcan.
By taking several of these trashcans, cutting them up and giving them hinges, we are able to create a multiplicity of uses, configurations, combinations and setups that allow for a wide array of situations to take place. One bug can be a bench, but if you close it and turn it it can be a table. Or maybe flip it and fill it with ice to make an impromptu cooler. The possibilites are endless, just as the surreal situations that happen daily on the streets. All of these bugs can be assembled together at the end of the day to be stored within a bigger bug.
It is also deeply mexican to turn everyday objects into something else that suits our needs.
